Concept コンセプト
The location is the Enoura Observatory in Odawara City, Kanagawa. The Enoura Observatory is a group of buildings designed by photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto. It is a place where one can feel the harmony between the dynamism of nature and the technology that has been passed down through the ages. The image I captured was the view I saw when I looked back on my way home. I saw the back of an old man who told me that he had fallen in love with this place and became a guide after retiring from the corporate world. Against the smooth gradation of the evening, there was a sense of melancholy as he walked along the pathway to the sea.
The stone architecture and the lone person standing there. This contrast seemed to crystallize the awe and beauty of nature that Sugimoto expresses in his architectural groupings, and the human activities that harmonize with them. 
撮影地は神奈川県小田原市にある江之浦測候所。写真家 杉本博司が手がける建築群である。自然のダイナミズムと、歴史の中で脈々と受け継がれてきた技術との調和を感じさせてくれる場所だ。切り取ったのは帰り際、後ろを振り返った先に見えた景色である。企業を退職後、この場所に惚れて案内人になったと話してくれた、お爺さんの後ろ姿があった。夕刻のなめらかなグラデーションを背景に、海へと向かう通路を歩く姿には哀愁が感じられる。
石造の建築と、そこに佇む一人の人間。この対比には、杉本が建築群で表現する、自然の畏怖と美しさ、そこに調和する人間の営みが結晶化しているように思えた。
